Radium area and Frontenpark

Frontenpark brings a splash of green to the northern part of the Belvédère area. It represents a blend of urban nature and repurposed industrial buildings.

Radiumplein and iconic buildings

From Past to Future

The Radium boasts a rich rubber legacy—a history still evident in its existing structures. This is showcased by the 45‑meter-high Radium chimney, the “Kunstfront”, and the LABbuilding. The Municipal Gasworks (colloquially known as the Coke Works) dates back to the pre‑rubber industry era. The large green gas holder near Stadsweide was built in the 1950s. Thanks to the relocation of the Noorderbrug, the Radium now occupies a prominent and easily accessible location.

In June 2024, het Radiumplein was completed and officially opened. The industrial heritage now provides space for creative industries, making it a place where past and present go hand in hand.

 Frontenpark

With the relocation of the Noorderbrug in 2017, space was freed for an entirely new urban park: the Frontenpark. Located on the northern side of the Sphinxkwartier, Frontenpark serves as a backyard of over twenty hectares, with a strong focus on flora, fauna, cultural heritage, and event opportunities.
